Child labor, I guess you could say that was me.

As a young man I can remember working with my mom in her apartment cleaning business. I enjoyed those times, working with my mom, she was a hard worker. My dad had died when I was just five years old.

Because of this it was my mom who taught me how to work and work hard. I can still hear her today saying, ” if a job is once begun never leave it till it’s done, be the task great or small do it well or not at all.” I am very thankful for the time I spent with my mom in child labor, it was good for me and gave me memories that I will never forget.

Child Labor Is Not Always Good

All of us have heard the horror stories from the young kids that worked in the mines and the sweat shops and others such horrible places. Children have often times been abused under the guise of child labor. Since those days things have changed and labor laws have been passed that will now protect children from much of the abuse that went on before the labor laws were passed. Many times those young kids that worked in the mines and such would get sick early in life and die an early death because they had been overworked and under cared for.

The Benefits of Child Labor

Under the direction of a mature adult who cares for and about children working can be a wonderful experience. As a result of my experience I learned to work hard and take great pride in my jobs. I have owned two businesses in my life and have always rose to a management position as a result of the work ethics that my mother took the time to lovingly instill in my heart and mind. When you work as a child you learn not to take things for granted. I also enjoyed spending my money that I had worked for. As a result of working hard for what I got the whole buying experience was much more enjoyable for me than if it was just handed to me.

Soon we will be publishing a child labor laws post giving you more of the legal in and outs of the California Labor Laws concerning the hiring of children. Until then keep smiling and take the time to enjoy the simple things in life like your family and friends.

Until next time.
